My New Front End
OK last time we left off with my project car we had just finished all the metal work. Now the focus of my attention is the really ugly front end of the VW Fox. the front end of the vw fox in North America is just not right to me. In Brazil (the home of the fox) the front bumper is much smaller and fits the body lines much better. A look I tried to duplicate by chopping down the bumper of my white car. It looked ok, but this time I wanted something more. So i decided the MK1 golf front end would be my inspiration for designing a new front end.
Stock MK1 Front end

MK1 front end with out bumpers looks OK to me.

ULGY so i set out to solve this problem
So i used this as a starting point

Now how to do this ? Metal would be my first choice so i set off to the junk yard with a tape measure and a sawzall. turns out the MK1 front end is about 5" narrower and the curves would not line up on the fox at all. So plan B, metal all custom. well i don't have the metal shaping skills or the right tools to do this job it turns out, after failing really bad (not even going to show the pic's it that bad). So on to plan C. fiberglass. this I kind of know what i am doing (A little bit)
This is ware it gets crazy!
Wood?

Crazy chemist time!

It's Alive!

It Finally stopped growing! what a mess? remove the wood?

We now have ourselves a blank canvas of a front end! Time to start shaping.

Humm this might just work? lots of just sitting and staring at the car. Then tons of numbers too.

Body lines revealed time to go for it

Taking shape

Some more chemistry

Went to the junk yard got some grill parts off a MK1. Including some metal to weld in around the headlights

Test fiting the grill

Now for the round metal inserts for the head lights

Getting there but the bottom edege is still off

So I ordered a large duck bill spoiler to help me find the curves for the bottom edge

More shaping

Getting there now it just didn’t look right. I figured it out it was way too high in the air! Fixed that

Kind of better… But still not quite right. Still too high. So some more smoothing and shaping

And the winner! I love it!

So after all the work I now have a shape I can live with. The next step is to make a mold from the front of the car. To acutely make the final part that goes on the car.
